Shoe Shopping Guide:
Climbing

Although climbing had developed into a recreational activity by the 17th century, it has gained great popularity in recent decades with the rise of “extreme” sports and constant media exposure. But while Hollywood glamorizes the sport and uses it for entertainment, the truth is that climbing is a rigorous activity that requires strength, discipline, focus and learned skills. Many would agree that at this point, climbing is no longer just a recreational activity or sport. To many dedicated climbers, climbing has become a lifestyle.

Climbing encompasses different styles and various terrains. There is Rock, Boulder, Gym, Sport, Ice, Traditional, Aid and Solo Climbing. Whichever type of climbing you choose, it’s important to have the right footwear. The right shoes will keep you safe, comfortable and help you to enjoy your climb to the top!

  • APPROACH
    • Before you can begin your climb, you will have to hike to your climbing destination first. For that you will need APPROACH SHOES.
  • BOULDERING
    • In Bouldering, a climber is ascending or traversing boulders or small outcrops. A safety rope is not utilized and climbers depend upon “crash pads” and human spotters in order to prevent injury. For Bouldering, you will need BOULDERING SHOES.
  • ROCK
    • In Rock Climbing, climbers ascend rock formations using equipment and devices. While safety equipment and footwear are essential to this difficult sport, so are endurance and mental control. ROCK CLIMBING SHOES vary in construction. Some are built like slippers while others have a high top construction. Furthermore, some rock climbing shoes are secured by hook and loop fasteners while others use conventional laces for a more customized fit. Advanced climbers tend to prefer the slipper type of shoe while beginners may be better off with an all-around or multi-purpose type of rock shoe with sneaker-like construction.
  • GYM
    • Some climbers like to hit the indoor climbing wall for training and/or recreation. For indoor rock climbing, climbers need DURABLE ROCK CLIMBING SHOES.
  • ICE
    • Climbing ice is a whole other story. Not only is one dealing with the rigors of climbing, one is also having to protect himself/herself from the cold climate. In addition, ice is slick. Keeping all that in mind, ice climbers need special ICE CLIMBING BOOTS or CRAMPON COMPATIBLE BOOTS.
