The highlander fills the niche between the flexible and low-profile fell shoe and the traditionally overly designed trail shoe. The positives begin with what might be the best lugs for traction in any shoe I've worn along with the best support for any minimalist fell type shoe. Throw in the fact that these offer much more cushion that other shoe of their type and you would think you would have a winner. Not so fast. As for the negatives, the additional cushioning seems to take away from the flexibility and responsiveness you would expect from a shoe in this niche. I loved the comfort but found my arches aching from lack of flexibility. Then I noticed too much play in the heel area. After comparing to other shoes, I believe this was caused by the back of the shoe angling too far out which probably added more weight than necessary to the shoe. I also noticed the overly cushioned collar retained more water than wanted which added to the weight in wet conditions. I still love the shoe but will stick to my INOV-8s and NB T800s for most runs. I still think with a little tweaking, this could be one of the best trail shoes out there.

Fantastic. The Montrail Highlander is hands down the best fast trail shoe I have ever had. Fits like a glove the first time you put them on. Low profile and amazing traction. Minimal support and Cousion. I purchased them initially to rarely wear when I was going for a PR on my favorite trails and discovered I did not need all the support my old shoes offered in the past. I run in these exclusively now.

Good and bad - Approx 200 miles of aggressive trail running on shoe. The good: Light, nice looking, no leather, durable materials, supportive despite minimal build, nice laces if you double knot them, never ever slip on a trail due to aggressive sole. The bad: No cushion in the toe box makes it painful on descents, the knobby sole (especially the heel area) clogs with mud negating the weight benefit, coming unstitched on both shoes on the outside seam where first strip integrates with faux suede toe protection, laces don't stay tied unless you double knot them. Feels like a racing shoe and works pretty well as one except for some key problems.

Nice shoes, go half a size big - Great trail runner, I run MTB trails and I never lose faith in the tread. I had to go half a size up. Heel cup is great, feels like someone is holding my heel, my ankle never turns-Great shoe and cool two-tone. Oh, and you don't see everyone wearing them either and that’s alright w/me. Word up.

Great shoe for cross-country running - Thank you, Montrail! Finally, a US company designed a decent shoe for fell/hill running and orienteering. People who wrote negative reviews are really wrong because they used these shoes for the wrong type of terrain. These shoes are designed for trail-less running. They have good support and grip. And they seem to be quite sturdy. We'll see how long they are going to last.

Sole too hard Finally Montrail makes a shoe that fits narrow, low volume feet. But these things have virtually no cushioning even on a soft trail. Unless your are real young and can take the pounding try some other shoe. Even at 5 miles on a soft trail they pounded my feet like a hammer.
