Nice rocker - I wanted a backpacking boot that would also provide the needed support for scrambling off trail or on scree and talus slopes. Seems that Scarpa nailed it with the Escape. When you slip your foot into these, and start walking, you notice almost immediately the nice rocker. You are literally propelled straight ahead and there is no scuffing of the toe or forefoot, a very important feature in a boot designed for all this boot can be utilized for. The forefoot flexes right behind the toes, unlike the Lowa Banff, which is not a lace to toe design, and therefore flexes further back, and causes the folding leather to compress down and bind against the top of the foot. I placed this boot on one foot and a Lowa Banff on the other, and found that this boot rolled along very quietly and smoothly on a hard floor, whereas the Lowa when ka-wop ka-wop. This was very telling to me. While standing with the Lowa on one foot and the Escape on the other, I found the Escape resisted ankle roll over to the outside a tad better. Also, the leather upper of the Escape is stiffer and therefore more supportive in the long term. This is crucial. With the Lowa, the leather, though beautiful is prone to softening overall, resulting in a boot that won't provide the necessary support for backcountry travel with a pack, or when working through scree and talus. I noticed that the Lowa's leather was soft enough that it would bind against the front of my ankle causing a pinching pain when flexing the forefoot upward toward the leg. This means that ascents can potentially result in chaffing and pain right under where lacing occurs. This boot is light for its rugged construction and beef. The forefoot volume is generous, not only in width, but in terms of vertical space for a larger instep, which I happen to have. More volume for the instep than the Lowa was easily apparent. No pinching against the top of the foot, or the front of the ankle when flexing this boot either. Scarpa seems to have engineered the flex points dead on. I thought that with Gore-Tex lining in the Escape it would feel too hot, but while wearing the non Gore-Tex Lowa and the Gore-Tex Escape at the same time, I didn't notice any discernable difference. I am used to hiking in Fabiano Mountain Masters with nice leather lining, but they are heavy. The Scarpa is a great alternative and I look forward to putting them through the paces this season. Now, if only Scarpa could line them with that buttery soft leather that Lowa lines their boots with.

Scarpa Escape - After much back and forth with a very patient Zappos, I finally found my size. About me: I normally wear a 10.5 shoe. My foot is narrow (size B - C) with a small heel. The size 44 is my fit (I did put green Superfeet in right off the bat). The 44.5 seem like a totally different boot (a lot more volume). I bought these for rugged hiking and backpacking. All that said, I just took them out for a rugged break-in hike (9.8 miles with over 4,300 feet of elevation change). I did develop hot spots on both the back of my ankles but I will attribute that two 3 things: New boots without any break-in, poor lacing (I didn't snug them down tight enough) on my part for the first three miles, and my feet being tender (haven't been out much lately). The boots are really great and performed wonderfully. Great support and shed water (8 stream crossings). The tread proved sure and secure and the dual lacing really allowed fine adjustment. These are well made high quality boots.
