I replaced a BBP bag that had a broken laptop compartment zipper with a 17" Commuter. The commuter has a layout that is very efficient, it seems to have as much storage as the BBP while being half the width. Build quality is visually about the same. The laptop compartment on the BBP was easier to get the laptop in and out. In one sweeping motion you could throw the laptop in and zip it up in the BBP. The Commuter requires serious concentration because a 17" Macbook barely fits. Let's just call it skin tight vs. baggy. Pros: efficient use of space for larger items. I can even fit my DSLR in it except for the zipper on the laptop compartment, it seems very well built. Lightweight. Cons: barely holds a Macbook pro 17", maybe it will stretch out over time, but you will fiddle with the zipper to get it closed. There is NO CHANCE any other 17" unit will fit in this thing. The laptop compartment zipper is already catching. I fear it will eventually fail under the stress. The carrying strap has ballistic nylon around it, it will rub your shoulder raw with a heavy load. I would prefer a softer gel material like many other bags have. I perceive there to be little protection for the laptop. There is about 1/4" of padding at the corners. I would not be surprised if a drop from waist height would cause damage if it lands on the corner or edge. I have faith that TimBuk2 tested it and that the design is efficient rather than negligent.
